Capital High School officials planned it as an opportunity for immigrant students to hear about ongoing immigration reform, but a rally at the school Thursday ended with students screaming at each other.
It started with about 200 students listening to the latest news on immigration reform from representatives from Somos Un Pueblo Unido. The presentation took place in the small gathering space outside the school’s entrance.
In the middle of the presentation, though, about 10 students gathered near the front of the school, waving United States flags and shouting “Go back to Mexico.”
After the presentation, the two groups taunted each other with flags and chanted “Mexíco” and “USA.”
School officials struggled to keep control and officers from the Santa Fe Police Department, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department and New Mexico State Police responded to calls of a riot at the school.
Students eventually returned to class without any major incidents. One student was detained by Santa Fe Police, though the cause is not yet known.
